  1. What is Autism? - How do you know if your child is autistic?

    Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (CHAT):
        Does your child enjoy being swung, bounced on your knee, etc.?
        Does your child take an interest in other children?
        Does your child like climbing on things, such as up stairs?
        Does your child enjoy playing
        peek-a-boo/hide-and-seek?
        Does your child ever PRETEND, for example, to make a cup of tea using a toy cup and teapot, or pretend other things?
        Does your child ever use his/her index finger to point to ask for something?
        Does your child ever use his/her index finger to point to indicate interest in something?
        Can your child play properly with small toys (e.g. cars or bricks) without just mouthing, fiddling with, or dropping them?
        Does your child ever bring objects over to you (parent) to SHOW you something?

    If the answer is no to 4 or more of these questions, including numbers 5 and 7, you should have your child evaluated by a developmental specialist in autism.

  2. Does ATC have a year round program and what are the hours of operation?

    Yes, the Center is open year round, even on holidays. The Center is open 24 hours a day. The school and vocational hours of operation are 8:30 AM to 4:30PM Monday through Friday. The residential program is in operation the remaining hours.

  3. Does ATC have any openings?

    Yes, at this time ATC has limited openings in both San Antonio and Dallas.

  4. What age does ATC accept for programming?

    School 3-21
    Vocational 18-no upper age limit
    Residential 3-no upper age limit

  5. What is the teaching style of the school?

    Each student has an individualized educational plan developed by an Interdisciplinary team. The student teacher ratio is one to three in most instances. One on one is provided as needed. The program is behaviorally based instruction with special attention given to the development of communication skills. Speech, occupational, physical and musical therapy is provided as needed. Other special therapies include art, dance and equestrian. The school program is approved by Texas Education Agency.

  6. What type of medical support does the program provide?

    ATC has a physician and other community specialists experienced with Autism spectrum disorder routinely on site. RN’s provide medical care 24 hours a day. Additional community physicians and specialists are used as needed. ATC has agreements with local hospitals to provided emergency treatment as needed.

  7. What types of skills are taught in a residential program?

    Daily living and independent skills are taught in a home environment. Behavior and communication training are incorporated with all activities. Residents go shopping, out to eat, to a movie, to the park and/or to other community activities daily.

  8. Does ATC accept individuals from other states?

    ATC has no geographic limitations.

  9. What is the cost of service?

    Costs are based upon individual needs and are very competitive with other private providers of autism services.

  10. What are the current funding sources?

    Local school districts, county, state, federal agencies and private pay.

  11. Does ATC provide outpatient diagnostic services?

    Yes, on a limited basis at the current time. ATC has developed a Diagnostic protocol utilizing the most current observational evaluation, Functional, behavioral and programming assessments and can include Biomedical considerations. This is a service slated for expansion and Development. The cost of this service is a minimum of $1000.00.
