When I started working at ATC in February of 1989, autism was found in 1 in 10,000 children. I had never heard of autism but I wanted to learn. As I approach my 30th year with ATC, I look back and think, “Wow I’m still here, they’re still here, and we did it.”
I began my career with ATC in the group home setting as a teaching parent. I had no idea what I was doing or how I could even help change the lives of these remarkable people ATC had entrusted in my care, but I followed the programs set in front of me by the behavior specialist and educators. I look back over the years and I realize I did make a difference, and boy, did they make a difference in my life. They taught me, as I taught them. Those I have served and still serve are family, we are growing old together and it’s wonderful. Maria Duncan |
